Collection: Takayuki Shibata
In the knife world, Takayuki Shibata—affectionately known as Shibata-san—needs no introduction, revered as a master sharpener and visionary craftsman. Hailing from Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, he honed his skills after working as a machinist at Mitsubishi, eventually channeling his passion for precision into the art of knife-making.
Shibata-san founded Masakage Knives in 2007, uniting top blacksmiths from Takefu Knife Village to preserve Japan’s traditional craftsmanship while bringing it to a global audience. He’s also the creative force behind the Koutetsu brand, known for its ultra-thin, laser-sharp blades inspired by Japan’s first ironclad warship, blending innovation with heritage. Beyond these, he’s affiliated with Shibata Tinker and collaborates with West Japan Tools, crafting tools and kitchenware that reflect his "Art over Beauty" philosophy. His sharpening techniques—often using different grits on each side of a blade—set a gold standard, making his knives a must-have for chefs and enthusiasts worldwide.
