Frequently Asked Questions
What blade materials can be engraved?
Our laser works on the vast majority of steel blades — including stainless steels, high-carbon steels, tool steels, and Damascus — as well as many handled materials such as G-10, wood, and bone. If you're unsure whether your specific blade is compatible, email us at Knives@DistrictCutlery.com before ordering and we'll let you know.
Where on the blade can the mark be placed?
Engraving can be applied to the flat of the blade (ricasso area or above the grind), the spine, or the bolster/handle depending on the knife's geometry and your design. Please note any placement preferences in the "Order Special Instructions" field at checkout or in your image-order email. If you don't specify, we'll choose the most practical location and confirm with you before engraving.
How do I care for my knife after engraving?
The engraved area is permanently marked into the steel, so no special coating is needed for everyday use. Clean the blade as you normally would — a soft cloth and mild soap, followed by thorough drying, works well for most knives. Avoid prolonged soaking or dishwasher cleaning, which can affect any knife regardless of whether it has been engraved.
Will the engraving rust or corrode on carbon-steel or other rust-prone blades?
Laser engraving removes a thin layer of steel to create the mark, which can expose fresh metal in the engraved area. On carbon-steel, high-carbon, or other rust-susceptible blades, this area may be somewhat more prone to surface oxidation than the rest of the blade. We recommend applying a thin coat of food-safe mineral oil, camellia oil, or your preferred blade oil to the entire blade — including the engraved area — after cleaning, and re-oiling periodically based on your usage and storage environment. Stainless steels are generally more resistant to rust, though they are not fully immune to corrosion in harsh or wet conditions.

District Cutlery engraved my name on two of my special chef knives, and did an exceptional job. I met with their expert at Union Market who showed me on a computer how the various fonts would look, which also allowed me to verify the spelling of my name and change appearance of the engraving before the work was done. The turnaround time was fast for personalized knives that will last a lifetime or longer.
